Veggie Van

Fill 'er Up

French Fry: The Riekes Centers Vegetable Powered Vehicle

A brief history of vegetable fuel- Diesel engines were created during World War II for use with peanut oil. During this time of petroleum shortages, farm tractors were soon growing the fuel necessary for food production. Until recently, the benefits of using vegetable oil for a fuel source have been largely forgotten. Vegetable oil is a renewable resource. It has cleaner emissions than petroleum diesel and can be produced without dependence on foreign countries. Unfortunately, modern diesel engines need to be modified to run on vegetable oil. Our van has been retrofitted to run on pure vegetable oil that is a filtered by-product from the restaurant business.

How our van works- Our van has been equipped with a second "start-up" tank. This tank is filled with diesel (or biodiesel) and warms the engine. Once the engine is warm we can change over to our vegetable oil tank and run all day with the warm, non-viscous oil. For more information visit www.greasecar.com.
